Bruno Fernandes, an offensive midfielder for Manchester United, will don the No. 8 jersey instead of the No. 18 he has worn since joining the team.
The international player from Portugal moves up from number 18 for the upcoming 2022-23 season and will wear his new number during Tour 2022.
He will play in the tour’s first game, which will take place next Tuesday in Bangkok versus Liverpool, and will be shown live on MUTV.
Fernandes, who has previously played for Udinese and Sporting Lisbon as well as the Portuguese national team, has always wanted to wear the number eight on his back.
Given that the 27-year-old was born on September 8th, 1994 and has the number eight inked on his bicep, it holds special significance for him.
However, fellow attacking midfielder Juan Mata was already wearing the jersey when Fernandes came to Old Trafford in January 2020.
As a result of Mata’s departure this summer, Fernandes has jumped right into the position.
Bruno Fernandes will finally be able to match his tattooed number with the number on his Manchester United jersey beginning with the 2019–2020 season, even though it may have taken a few seasons.
The news was made on Thursday prior to United’s preseason trip to Thailand and Australia.
The player did this by tweeting a photo of himself potting an 8 ball on Twitter.
Five United players have worn No. 8 since permanent squad numbers were adopted before the 1993–94 season; Fernandes is the latest, joining Paul Ince, Nicky Butt, Wayne Rooney, Anderson, and Mata.
At Manchester United, Bruno Fernandes will don the number 8 jersey left vacant by his close buddy, Juan Mata.
He had earlier made a joke with Mata during the previous campaign that the Spaniard’s new contract had prevented him from obtaining his preferred number, to which Juan responded with a smile.
In advance of the 2022–23 season, Fernandes is the only active player on the Red Devils team to have changed shirt numbers.
Bruno will be hoping for a new beginning under Erik ten Hag despite a disappointing past season.
He would have fierce competition in the team with the addition of Christian Eriksen and the welcome return of Donny Van de Beek.
Furthermore, Bruno may have trouble due to Ten Hag’s tendency to play cautiously while in control.
Sometimes, because of his wastefulness, United lose the ball in crucial situations.
His willingness to take chances is admirable, but occasionally it can come off as odd, particularly when there are better alternatives.
The hopes of United supporters are that Ten Hag will make better choices and develop into the team’s number 8 for many years to come.
Tyrell Malacia, a recent acquisition, will officially wear the number 12 jersey for Manchester United.
Tuesday saw the announcement of the 22-year-old’s transfer to the team from Feyenoord, and he will now wear the number for the first time as a Red during Tour 2022.
