Chelsea are stepping up their transfer activity. If Barcelona permits both players to go this month, Chelsea is prepared to sign Frenkie de Jong and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Chelsea is willing to match United’s offer of £72 million, and unlike United, they can give De Jong access to the Champions League.
Chelsea look to complete a double swoop for the Dutch midfielder and striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with Marcos Alonso moving the other way.
It comes amid allegations that De Jong’s contract predicament has led to tension in the Barca locker room.
While the player was insulted on Wednesday by a group of Blaugrana fans outside their training facilities amid calls to decrease his wage.
After holding new negotiations with the player, Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag recently told his team to be patient, but the Blues are reportedly growing more optimistic about signing him.
Although United and the Catalan club have an initial fee in place for a trade that would reunite De Jong with his former Ajax manager, Ten Hag, no formal agreement has yet been reached.
Chelsea have expressed interest in gazumping the Red Devils after three months of transfer negotiations.
Blues executives are now major competitors to capture De Jong from under United’s noses after speaking with Barca and his representatives.
Barca owes De Jong €17 million in late payments and amortizations, which is one of the main reasons the transfer has taken so long.
That is connected to the extension of his contract that he signed with the team in October 2020, when Josep Maria Bartomeu was president.
Bartomeu and the rest of the board resigned a few weeks later.
At the time, De Jong signed a new contract along with Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, Gerard Pique, and Clement Lenglet.
Pique agreed to a new salary cut with the team this week while midfielder Sergio Busquets’s contract was being restructured.
According to AS, De Jong’s refusal to agree to a wage cut from the club has led to tension in the locker room.
Barcelona is reportedly considering legal action against De Jong over contract terms.
They are also reportedly looking into Ter Stegen’s and Lenglet’s contracts.
The Catalan giants were instructed to cut back on their spending after La Liga refused to register their five new recruits and two contract extensions this summer.
This financial predicament has also made it possible for Chelsea to sign Aubameyang in a spectacular move that would occur little over six months after he transferred from Arsenal to the Camp Nou.
Lewandowski, Ferran Torres, and Raphinha’s additions this year have increased competition for attacking players.
As Chelsea looks to replace Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner this summer, Aubameyang and Blues manager Thomas Tuchel, who were formerly teammates at Borussia Dortmund, may rejoin at Stamford Bridge.
In January, he made a free transfer from Arsenal to Barcelona. His contract has three more years to run.
Thomas Tuchel is eager to reunite with Aubameyang, who scored 79 goals for him in two seasons at Borussia Dortmund, despite his reluctance to discuss him in public.
