Erik ten Hag is eager to resurrect Manchester United, and he has confirmed that superstar forward Cristiano Ronaldo will be involved next season.
Erik ten Hag, the new manager of Manchester United, has spoken about striker Cristiano Ronaldo for the first time since his appointment was revealed.
With Edinson Cavani’s contract expiring this summer, Ronaldo will be the Red Devils’ only striker when Ten Hag arrives.
Although the manager looks to have huge ambitions for Ronaldo, it is no secret that he will be looking for reinforcements.
After scoring 18 goals in 30 Premier League appearances this season, some have questioned if the 37-year-old striker has a future at the club.
Given that United will not be competing in the Champions League next season and will instead compete in the Europa League/European Conference League, there have been rumors that he could press for a move.
Ten Hag discussed his plans for Ronaldo after Ajax’s final game of the season.
“Starting tomorrow, my focus will be on United, and I will, of course, go deep into matters there.” he said.
“In-depth analysis has yet to begin, and I have yet to work with the club, but let me be clear that United has many good players.
That’s what I have to say. We need to get them to work together as a unit, but Ronaldo is a giant.”
Despite Ten Hag’s aspirations to completely overhaul his United squad, the former Real Madrid striker is undoubtedly a key character in his plans and might be a figure around whom he builds his team in the medium term.
However, the club has recently been linked with Harry Kane and Darwin Nunez, who aren’t the types of guys who can warm the bench.
Ronaldo has also spoken out about Ten Hag, and the Portugal captain appears to be eager to invest in the Dutchman’s Old Trafford project.
“What I know about him is that he did a terrific job for Ajax and that he’s a seasoned coach.” he remarked.
“However, we must give him time. Things need to change in his favor. Of course, I hope he succeeds because if you succeeds, so will Manchester. I wish him nothing but the best.
Not just as players but also as supporters, we are thrilled and excited. I wish him the best of luck, and let us hope that we will win trophies next year.” He added.
Ten Hag will also be looking to strengthen his midfield this summer, especially with so many players leaving before he arrives.
Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, and Juan Mata have all announced their departures, with Nemanja Matic following suit.
Declan Rice of West Ham and Monaco prospect Aurelien Tchouameni are among the players linked with a move to United.
The Red Devils are also reported to be keeping an eye on a number of Premier League players, including Southampton’s James Ward, Brighton’s Yves Bissouma, and Wolves’ Ruben Neves.
