Diogo Dalot on Barcelona’s radar with Xavi keen on the Man United star

Diogo Dalot, a standout for Manchester United, has apparently been identified as Barcelona manager Xavi’s “top” transfer target.

Diogo Dalot’s contract with Manchester United is set to expire at the conclusion of this season, and Barcelona is reportedly interested in signing him owing to his stellar play for the Red Devils.

Despite continuing financial constraints, the Blaugrana were very active in the summer transfer window.

Xavi wanted to find a right-back, and Barcelona eventually acquired Hector Bellerin after Arsenal released him on a free transfer.

Since then, Bellerin has hardly played and appears to have only been added as a backup for Sergio Roberto after Sergino Dest was permitted to join AC Milan on loan.

Jules Kounde, a recent addition, is also capable of playing there, but it’s believed that Xavi is looking for a long-term solution and that Dalot is his first goal.

The 23-year-old has reestablished himself in the starting lineup at Old Trafford under Erik ten Hag, but it’s believed the United manager is still considering signing a new right-back soon.

Before Ten Hag decided to remain with Dalot and backup Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the end, Dest was one of the players who had been linked with a move to United in the summer.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Dalot wants to stay at United and extend his current deal, but the club has not yet started talks.

In the meantime, Barcelona is said to have made a lot of progress in their pursuit of the Portuguese international as per Sport Witness.

The current contract for Dalot is set to expire at the end of the current campaign, but United have the right to extend it by an additional year.

However, if Ten Hag believes Dalot is not the best choice to continue in the position, they might be open to a sale in the summer.

If United were to first give Dalot a one-year extension on his contract in order to recover some sort of compensation, this summer would be the ideal time for them to sell him.

Barcelona used their summer transfer budget on other objectives, but they might come back in the coming months if additional money becomes available.

Given that club president Joan Laporta said he would support Xavi in the market, it might happen as soon as the January transfer window.

“For this winter market, we are collaborating with the coach, the technical secretariat, and the director of football,” said Laporta.

According to Sport, Barcelona’s next top targets are a right-back and a defensive midfielder.

One of the team’s “weak points” has been cited as center midfield, where Sergio Busquets is expected to leave at the end of the current campaign.

Frenkie de Jong, who can play in the holding position, is available, although it is still unclear what will become of him at Barcelona.

In a recent statement, the Dutchman called out Barcelona for attempting to force him out of the team in the summer amid Man United’s interest, also calling out lies concerning his pay.
