Erik ten Hag shares his opinion on Wout Weghorst following his Man United debut

Erik ten Hag has emphasized that Wout Weghorst will need time to adjust to life at Manchester United after the Dutchman’s lackluster debut performance against Crystal Palace.

Erik ten Hag expressed satisfaction with Wout Weghorst’s Manchester United debut but stated that the on-loan Burnley striker still has more to offer.

Weghorst, 30, joined the Red Devils on a six-month loan from Burnley over the weekend and made his debut on Wednesday night at Selhurst Park, making him the club’s second acquisition of the January transfer window.

However, the former Wolfsberg player was unable to help United, which lost ground in the race for the championship as Michael Olise’s incredible injury-time equalizer erased Bruno Fernandes’ first-half goal.

Weghorst was substituted after 70 minutes and didn’t have much of an influence versus Palace, although he did give Fernandes the opportunity to score the game’s first goal with a well-placed near-post run.

Ten Hag stated that he was pleased with Weghorst’s performance after the game and promised that there would be many more to come once he was fully up to speed.

“I think he did fairly well,” the United manager told Sky Sports. “He has to change the way we play. He is unfamiliar with how we play. Only a brief briefing and his final workout were held for him; there were no games.”

Weghorst, who previously played in the Premier League with Burnley last season, will be eager to make a good impression after scoring just twice in 20 games there.

Weghorst was impressive for the Netherlands at the World Cup, scoring twice in their defeat to Argentina in the quarterfinals. Prior to being recruited by Old Trafford, he scored nine goals in 18 games for Besiktas.

Some people were surprised by Ten Hag’s decision to include Weghorst in the game just days after he joined Old Trafford, but the Dutchman stated that he was eager to include the large striker as soon as possible and praised Weghorst’s link-up ability.

Ten Hag said, “I thought it [starting Weghorst] was the ideal choice, as he had the profile of a nine, and I thought he did well,” to the official website of Manchester United.

He played well with others and made a strong front-post run to score the opening goal by removing two defenders. He made Bruno [Fernandes] more liberated. Additionally, you can see from the pressing that it was a solid debut.
