It remains to be seen if any other teams come knocking for Frenkie de Jong besides Manchester United, but the Barcelona midfielder holds Arsenal in high regard.
Before Barcelona hastened his professional path, Frenkie de Jong aspired to follow in the footsteps of Marc Overmars.
Ajax’s star performances came in the Erik ten Hag side that made a spectacular run to the Champions League semi-final in 2019. The midfielder was one of Ajax’s star performers.
With De Jong coming to Camp Nou the following summer, the majority of that legendary team has gone on.
Since joining Barca, the Dutch international has established his spot in the midfield, but it’s been said that the La Liga club is prepared to let him depart this summer for the appropriate price.
Barcelona, according to Spanish newspaper El Chringuito, no longer considers the 24-year-old a vital element of the team and is open to bids in the range of £60 million.
Manchester United are said to be interested in Ten Hag as he seeks a reunion with De Jong.
The first item of business for the incoming Old Trafford manager is to buy a midfielder to solve a long-standing problem at the club.
It’s unclear whether De Jong is willing to leave Barcelona and whether any other teams would enter the competition.
Arsenal, according to football london, might be in the mix, considering the player’s fondness for the Emirates.
One of De Jong’s inspirations is Marc Overmars, who joined Arsenal from Ajax in 1997 before moving to Barcelona in 2000 following three successful years in north London.
De Jong was reportedly trying to recreate the Ajax-Arsenal-Barcelona route while still at the Amsterdam Arena, but he ended up missing the intermediate stage when the Spanish giants came calling.
De Jong grew up idolizing Arsenal and praised the club’s “very amazing past.”
“I honestly believed Arsenal was fairly attractive in the past,” he commented to Voetbal International in 2019.
“For a long time, I’ve had the following list in my head: Call it the Marc Overmars route: Ajax-Arsenal-Barcelona.
However, if you can go directly to Barcelona, you will be exactly where you want to be faster than you could have imagined.”
Arsenal technical director Edu has stated that he is “enthusiastic” about the club’s ambitions for the summer transfer window, stating that Mikel Arteta’s side intends to make “two marquee acquisitions.”
“We prefer to spend the resources we spent last summer to rebalance the team,” Edu told ESPN Brasil.
“Stating there was really no need for the one or two players who were recruited in January.
The group was not equipped to absorb two players, so we needed to adjust the roster.”
“Next season, we might be able to limit ourselves to one or two guys.We now have a much more balanced team.
Our planning has met it’s conclusion and have already been delivered to the owners.
It’s a question of figuring out how we’ll complete the season and putting the preparation in place that I’m looking forward to.”
