Manchester United are interested in acquiring Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong this summer, with Erik ten Hag eager to reconnect with his old Ajax teammate.
Frenkie de Jong has stated his wish to remain at Barcelona, but Arsenal should be more confident than Manchester United that he will reconsider his decision.
United were reportedly considering a £75 million bid for De Jong, according to the Manchester Evening News, and Ten Hag had selected the player as a priority target.
There has now been talk of a meeting between Ten Hag and De Jong, in which the incoming United manager attempted to persuade the 25-year-old to leave his current club for a move to Old Trafford.
De Jong, on the other hand, wants to play Champions League football next season and does not want to play in the second tier of European football with United.
Although the transfer appears improbable at this time, Barcelona’s financial position may compel them to sell the highly rated midfielder.
According to reports in Spain, Barcelona no longer considers the 24-year-old to be an essential element of the team and are open to bids in the area of £60 million.
United, who are looking for a new midfielder, have indicated interest in the playmaker, who Erik ten Hag is anxious to rejoin after their time together at Ajax.
If he says no, United will have to look at other options since the midfield is in desperate need of repair this summer.
When Paul Pogba’s contract ends in June, he is expected to join Juventus, while Jesse Lingard and Nemanja Matic’s contracts will also expire in June.
The Dutchman, on the other hand, claims that he is content at the Nou Camp and that a transfer to Old Trafford would not appeal to him.
“I prefer to stay in Barcelona, as I’ve stated previously.” he remarked. Since I was a child, Barca has been the club of my dreams.
I will, of course, accept calls from other teams; it is something that I have always done. I don’t want to discuss rumors any more. I’m in a terrific mood in Barcelona.”
De Jong acknowledges he is aware of United’s interest, but he refuses to say if he has spoken to Ten Hag.
“Of course, I know about the Manchester United ties,” he said, “but the guys in charge of Barca didn’t tell me anything.
So I’ll presume there’s no consensus and that there’s nothing to be concerned about.” “I won’t tell you this,” he said when asked if he had spoken with Ten Hag.
One of De Jong’s inspirations is Marc Overmars, who joined Arsenal from Ajax in 1997 before moving to Barcelona in 2000 after three successful years in north London.
De Jong was reportedly trying to recreate the Ajax-Arsenal-Barcelona route while still at the Amsterdam Arena, but he ended up missing the intermediate stage when the Spanish giants came calling.
De Jong grew up idolizing Arsenal and praised the club’s “very amazing past.” “I honestly believed Arsenal was very attractive in the past.” he commented to Voetbal International in 2019.
“For a long time, I’ve had the following list in my head: Call it the Marc Overmars route: Ajax-Arsenal-Barcelona.
However, if you can go directly to Barcelona, you will be exactly where you want to be. “Faster than you ever imagined.”
