Gerard Pique falls out with Xavi Hernandez over a lack of playing time, as Barcelona hope he quits.

Barcelona are hoping that Gerard Pique will terminate his contract after an altercation with Xavi Hernandez in the locker room about the defender’s lack of playing time.

With Barcelona eager for him to quit his contract, the seasoned central defender reportedly got into an argument with Xavi after the Champions League defeat against Bayern Munich.

Barcelona hopes that Gerard Pique honors his commitment to stop playing football professionally and does not accept a spot as a substitute.

The seasoned defender, Pique, has made 608 first-team appearances for the Catalan club, but he has only started one of the team’s eight games this season, lining up against Cadiz in La Liga.

His only other appearance was as a substitute against Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League.

Pique has lost favor under Xavi as a result of the additions of Jules Kounde and Andreas Christensen, as well as the recent popularity of younger players like Ronald Araujo and Eric Garcia in the starting lineups.

Sport claims that the attitude at Barcelona is, “Let’s see whether he fulfills his promise,” which indicates that the Blaugrana are hoping that Pique can help to ease some of the pressure on their financial predicament.

Despite taking a number of salary deferrals and cutbacks over the previous few years, Pique continues to be one of Barca’s biggest earners, earning an estimated £46 million annually, according to Sport.

The 35-year-deal, which expires in 2024, has two more seasons to run.

According to the same report, Barca is hoping that he will honor his earlier commitment to leave the team once he is no longer in the starting lineup.

“I will retire with Barcelona, but never as a substitute,” Pique is alleged to have said in a prior interview.

After the humiliating 8-2 loss to Bayern Munich in the 2020 Champions League, Pique declared: “If tomorrow Ronald Koeman tells me I have to go, I will leave football. I won’t participate in any other team but Barcelona.”

After what Pique and manager Xavi allegedly stated after last week’s Champions League loss away to Bayern Munich, Barca executives are reportedly eager for him to fulfill that pledge.

According to reports, the defender complained to teammates about not getting enough playing time, and Xavi’s dismissive reply was, “And you are going to play even less now.”

Pique is currently the club’s fifth-choice center defense, and while his playing time this season is expected to be significantly reduced, it is improbable that he will complete his career anywhere else than the Camp Nou.
