In an end-of-season address to Manchester United supporters, Harry Maguire revealed how deeply the club’s players are “hurting” as a result of their disastrous season.
Manchester United captain Harry Maguire acknowledged on social media following Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace that the entire squad is “hurting” after a rough season.
After finishing second in the Premier League last season, United began this season hoping to launch a prolonged title assault under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
United, on the other hand, have had their worst season in the Premier League’s history.
When Solskjaer was fired in November, he paid the ultimate price for United’s dismal run, but things haven’t improved under interim manager Ralf Rangnick.
In front of United’s new permanent manager, Erik ten Hag, who was watching from the stands at Selhurst Park, the German coach was unable to sign off in style as United suffered a demoralising 1-0 defeat at Crystal Palace.
With Manchester United’s disastrous season finally coming to a close, Maguire turned to social media on Sunday night to send a message to the club’s supporters, stating that the team “accepts full responsibility” for such a horrible season.
He wrote on Twitter: “Disappointing end to a season full of lows , we are so hurt with how this season has gone. The squad takes full responsibility and we know that what we have shown is nowhere near good enough for this club.”
Ralf Rangnick, a well-liked and trusted strategist, was appointed as a safe pair of hands to get United through the season until a long-term appointment could be made.
But the punches kept coming, and despite a promising start in the dugout, the Germans’ stay would go down in history as one of their worst.
And, while Erik ten Hag’s arrival will bring in a new era at Old Trafford, the investigation into their disastrous season of 2021-22 is still underway.
Last week, he stated, “We never got close to the aggressive, pro-active football I’d ordinarily want to do.
If you want to play like that, it has to do with physicality. I should have done more to nurture this team in a more long-term manner.”
While the temporary leader deserves part of the blame, the worn-out dressing room is also being criticized.
Roy Keane famously prophesied that United’s players would force Solskajer out, and leaks have persisted with worrying regularity in the months afterwards.
According to reports, one point of friction among the playing staff has been the leadership.
Maguire has suffered more than any other at Old Trafford this season, and he has been widely criticized for a succession of bad performances laced with errors.
As a result of his dismal play, the 29-year-old has even faced calls to be stripped of his leadership.
Manchester United’s dreadful Premier League season is finally over, but reports of a schism in the dressing room persist, with new accusations that Harry Maguire was left out of a crucial club meeting.
Ten Hag is allegedly keen to improve United’s spine by bringing in a central defender in the summer, putting his job at the club in jeopardy.
Pau Torres of Villarreal has been linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent times.
However, after performing in front of his new manager for the first time on Sunday, Maguire acknowledged his delight at Ten Hag’s coming and stated that the entire United team is “looking forward” to working with him.
Maguire told BBC Sport: “The boys have not met or talked to him yet. I’m sure he’d be watching our game today. We’re all excited to collaborate with him.”
Ten Hag arrived at Old Trafford after leading Ajax to their third Dutch title.
