Jose Mourinho had criticized Chelsea after the club spent £87 million to recruit Mykhaylo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk.
This month, the Blues brilliantly halted Arsenal’s pursuit of the forward by rapidly reaching an arrangement with the Ukrainian team.
The 21-year-old has been on the Gunners’ radar for some time, but several of their offers were turned down until Chelsea pounced.
The Blues hurriedly pushed through a contract to sign Mudryk as they were having trouble under Graham Potter. They did this by instantly agreeing to pay Shakhtar’s £87 million asking price, which was something Arsenal had been unwilling to do.
22-year-old Mudryk had an outstanding first half of the season with the Ukrainian powerhouses, scoring 11 goals in 19 outings, including three in the Champions League group stage.
Mudryk, a product of the club academy, has emerged as the star and talisman of a squad that has lost a lot of players over the past year owing to the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.
In his post-game press conference on Sunday, former Blues manager Jose Mourinho brought up the conclusion after his team defeated Fiorentina at home by a score of two goals in Serie A.
It was mentioned after the conversation turned to the Giallorossi’s January transfers.
As quoted by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Mourinho said after the game, “I am not expecting anyone to arrive.”
“The director (Tiago Pinto) was really straightforward and honest; he said things in the interview that a coach often doesn’t like to hear.
In order to construct an outstanding team, coaches always want to hear that they have a lot of money and can purchase options a, b, c, and d.
These days, there are more and more clubs that meet that description, but that is not our description. We put in a lot of effort and work within the limitations of our abilities.
We need to find a solution; we can’t just purchase Mudryk for €100 million (£87 million)! Mourinho then started talking about how his own team may address injuries and form issues.”
After the move, the Ukrainian international said: “At this point in my career, this is a really alluring proposition for me because it is a large club in an amazing league.
I’m looking forward to working with Graham Potter and his team and getting to know my new team members.”
Just after the hour mark, Kai Havertz scored to give Chelsea the victory over Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge.
With his addition, the Blues have already added five players to their roster this month, and Potter is happy to have beaten Arsenal to Mudryk’s signature.
