Jose Mourinho makes shocking revelation following the appointment of Roberto Martinez as Portugal’s manager

Jose Mourinho has admitted that after Fernando Santos was fired, he was offered the chance to manage Portugal but turned it down.

After being eliminated from the World Cup, Portugal fired manager Fernando Santos, and Jose Mourinho, the former manager of Porto, was one of the candidates floated before Roberto Martinez was chosen.

After the 2022 World Cup, Santos, who had guided his country to victory at Euro 2016, was let go. Portugal won their group and easily defeated Switzerland in the round of 16, but they were shocked by Morocco in the quarterfinals.

The nation’s FA chose former Belgium manager Roberto Martinez after hunting for a new manager for a few weeks.

However, new remarks from Mourinho indicate that the Roma manager was very much in the running before declining the position.

Following the Portuguese FA’s approach, Mourinho said that he felt “proud.” He ultimately decided to stay in Rome, though, after Roma won the Europa League the previous season.

According to Cabine Sport, the former Chelsea manager added, “The fact that the president of the FPF said that I was not his first choice, but his only one, makes me proud. I choose not to go, though. What matters is that I’m here.”

Under Mourinho, Roma has made some noise in the Champions League this year after finishing sixth in Serie A last year.

The future of Cristiano Ronaldo on the international stage is one of the major problems facing new Portugal manager Martin Martinez.

The seasoned player was benched by Santos for the two World Cup knockout matches, with differing results, and has now agreed to join Saudi club Al Nassr.

After being confirmed in his new position, Martinez told reporters that football choices must be made on the field of play.

“I’m not a decision-making coach for businesses. I want to get in touch with all of the players, so that is where I will start.

Cristiano deserves to sit down and talk because he has been a member of the national team for 19 years. My starting point is the list of the 26 players from the World Cup.”
