Saul Niguez has surfaced as a contender to take the place of Paul Pogba after the Frenchman sustained an injury with Juventus already moving replace the French player.
Pogba signed a four-year deal with the Serie A giants after leaving Manchester United at the conclusion of the previous campaign.
He was slated to be one of Juventus’ marquee acquisitions for the summer, but less than a month after announcing his return, he suffered a significant setback.
The Bianconeri appear to be seriously considering re-entering the midfielder market.
The club have been busy in the market thus far this summer, and thanks to the money received from the sale of Matthijs de Ligt to Bayern Munich, they now have the funds necessary to look into potential replacements.
Massimiliano Allegri now needs to find a substitute for Pogba, 29, as he faces a lengthy period of time out due to his current circumstances.
Saul, who spent last season on loan at Chelsea from Atletico Madrid, has reportedly moved to the top of their list of priorities.
He struggled through his time at Stamford Bridge, though, and eventually left for Madrid without the Blues exercising their option to sign him permanently.
However, as they look to reduce their payroll, Atletico is still eager to offload the midfielder.
Juve are reportedly considering going back to the transfer market for a replacement in midfield, but that offer was rejected and the La Liga team instead presented him to Juve as a replacement for Pogba.
The more likely scenario is a loan rather than a permanent move.
After his disastrous loan stint in the Premier League, Saul returned to Atletico at the start of preseason.
Although he only played 10 times in the Premier League, he believed that his time at Chelsea had been beneficial.
“I am mentally prepared for it, eager to get home, and looking forward to it. Also I genuinely want to see my coworkers, the coach, and return to working for him.
I think it was a wonderful experience for me to go out at a time when I wasn’t feeling well psychologically, despite the fact that I didn’t have the necessary minutes, “he said.
The injury is a major setback for Juventus, who had made Pogba one of their top summer targets as they look to rebuild under Massimiliano Allegri.
Pogba, who joined the team this summer after leaving Manchester United on a free transfer, sustained a lesion to his right lateral meniscus in his knee.
This ailment could keep him out for several months and may force him to miss this year’s Qatar World Cup.
