Manchester United turned down the chance to utilize Harry Maguire in their attempt to buy Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong, despite weekly criticism.
Frenkie De Jong is one of Manchester United’s top targets this summer.
However, The Sun reports that the club is unwilling to part ways with Harry Maguire in order to fund the transfer. Harry Maguire’s subpar performance last season.
It would appear that Ten Hag would not have enough players to field a team if he were to discharge every player who had a bad season.
Erik ten Hag is eager to reconcile with several of his former teammates at Old Trafford as part of his rebuilding of the Red Devils.
De Jong was given the chance to establish himself as a first-team regular at Ajax by the manager, and this summer, Ten Hag has given him first attention.
If De Jong is able to join the team before they go to Thailand for the first leg of the preseason tour, it will give Ten Hag and the team a much-needed lift.
Barca are apparently eager to part ways with the Netherlands international in order to increase their transfer budget, and negotiations are said to be moving further.
A deal hasn’t been made yet, though, because United hasn’t paid the La Liga team’s asking price of £69 million.
However, Barca have given United the chance to purchase De Jong for less than that, but only if they will permit defender Maguire to transfer to the Camp Nou as part of the deal.
The Red Devils rejected the offer despite his erratic leadership as club captain, which has drawn heavy criticism.
Ten Hag is excited to collaborate with Maguire next season, and the player is keen to succeed after a challenging season and wants to stay at the Theatre of Dreams.
But it is uncertain if the former defender for Leicester City will continue to wear the captain’s hat for the forthcoming season.
Given that Maguire failed in the previous campaign, even while Raphael Varane, who was equally unimpressive, was playing alongside him, the faith in Maguire will undoubtedly raise questions among United supporters.
Wes Brown, a former Red Devils defender, feels that the 29-year-old has received too much criticism.
“Some of the criticism thrown at Maguire was over the line, but this is how football works these days,” he told the Irish Independent.
“People start criticizing players on social media, and as that criticism gains traction, Harry has become a victim.
He’s been derided on Twitter by United supporters and booed by England fans, which seems rather cruel.
I understand why supporters are upset; after what we saw the previous season, we were all disappointed. Therefore, it is inevitable that some players will be singled out and blamed.”
If United is to obtain the signatures of some of their other objectives without cutting ties with those who Ten Hag wants to collaborate with, they will be hoping that they can make financial savings somewhere else.
This summer, the manager is eager to sign Christian Eriksen, who is available on a free transfer, to play with De Jong in the middle of the field.
The international player from Denmark is leaving Brentford this summer after a successful campaign under Thomas Frank.
The former Tottenham player allegedly has a decent chance of joining United, but the playmaker is thinking about staying with Brentford longer after being offered the chance to play football again by the team.
