Sergio Ramos sends touching retirement message to Gerard Pique

While competing against each other for Spain and splitting the El Clasico rivalry, Sergio Ramos and Gerard Pique had a great athletic friendship.

The match between Barcelona and Almeria at the Nou Camp on Saturday will be Gerard Pique’s final game as a professional football player, as he has announced his retirement.

Sergio Ramos, a former Real Madrid captain, tweeted a retirement greeting to Spain teammate and Barcelona rival Gerard Pique.

The two were strong competitors at the club level despite being former Spain international colleagues.

Ramos, who joined Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent a year ago, was the long-time captain at Real Madrid while Pique shone for Barcelona.

Pique has declared his impending retirement, saying this weekend’s match between Barcelona and Almeria will be his last Barcelona game at the Camp Nou.

He will also be part of the Blaugrana lineup for their penultimate match before the World Cup in Qatar this summer, when they take on Osasuna.

Even though the last of Pique’s 102 international caps came in 2018—just before his retirement from international football—the experienced central defender was eye-catchingly named in Spain’s preliminary 55-man roster for the World Cup championships.

Many of those appearances for Spain were made alongside Ramos in the center of the defense; the pair won the 2010 World Cup together as well as the 2012 European Championships.

Ramos has 180 appearances for the Spain national squad, making him the most capped player in La Roja ever. However, none have been made since the beginning of 2021 owing to ongoing fitness issues.

Ramos has revealed his intentions and hopes of being selected for Luis Enrique’s Spain World Cup squad. Ramos has not experienced defeat for Paris Saint-Germain in his 30 appearances for the club, a record in the French capital.

He has also enjoyed a resurgence of form and fortune in the French capital this season.

In response to Pique’s decision to hang up his boots, Ramos has since released a tweet in which he pays tribute to Pique.

The PSG defender urged his former foe and teammate to cherish all of his accomplishments and live life to the fullest.

Ramos and Pique have had a contentious relationship as a result of Ramos’ comments against his former Spain teammate, with whom he has previously had disagreements.

They competed against one another in La Liga for more than ten years and played together more than 80 times for Spain at the international level.
