Following an embarrassing 4-0 preseason loss to Arsenal, Thomas Tuchel stated that his own team is “not competitive” at the moment.
In recent weeks, the Blues boss has presented a disgruntled image, and it is evident that he feels the hierarchy is not doing enough to get the players he desires to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea lost 4-0 to Arsenal as their preseason tour of America came to a conclusion, and Thomas Tuchel was candid in his evaluation of his team.
Tuchel was furious with both the players on the field and those in Chelsea’s upper echelons after the Blues’ dismal performance against the Gunners in Orlando.
Even further, the German implied that his team is not yet prepared for the Premier League season, which begins in less than two weeks.
“I am unable to promise that they will be prepared.
I witnessed a squad today in Arsenal that is physically and mentally committed to a level of play that we are not capable of matching.”
Raheem Sterling, a former star for Manchester City, and Kalidou Koulibaly, a former Napoli stalwart, are the only signings Chelsea have made thus far this transfer window, but Tuchel wants more, as he made clear following the game.
“We issued an urgent call for talented athletes. Despite adding two excellent players, our level of competition is lacking,” Tuchel clarified.
“We will hopefully see development, but right now we are dealing with the same problems because we are using the same players.”
While it’s clear that incoming players are on his radar, Stamford Bridge is now experiencing an even bigger difficulty with exiting players.
Given the number of Chelsea players attempting to force through transfers before the window ends on September 1.
Tuchel mentioned this as well, saying that certain players may have been struggling with a lack of “mental commitment.”
A number of players, including the team’s captain, Cesar Azpilicueta, left defender Marcos Alonso, and players like Timo Werner and Christian Pulisic, who believe they should see more frequent action, want to leave.
According to Tuchel, all of these emotions were manifested on the field while playing against Mikel Arteta’s team.
“We lacked this degree of mental dedication since so many of our players are considering leaving and weighing their alternatives.
We have lost players, and I believe that is currently clear.”
In an effort to improve their present defensive options, Chelsea have been linked with a deal for Sevilla defender Jules Kounde for some time.
Between the Blues and Barcelona, it’s still unclear who is really in the lead for the Frenchman’s signature.
The American tour had not given his team an easy basis to work from but Tuchel was not willing to blame their Arsenal beating entirely on that fact.
The Chelsea manager is aware that, in the overall scheme of things, they are already far behind title contenders Manchester City and Liverpool.
