Virgil van Dijk issues response to unreserved criticism from Marco van Basten

Following the 1-1 tie with Ecuador, Marco van Basten criticized Virgil Van Dijk, who has now responded to the criticism.

The Netherlands are in danger of not moving on to the round of 16 of the Qatar World Cup after failing to cling onto a one-goal advantage over Group A rivals Ecuador on Friday.

Cody Gakpo’s first-half goal gave Louis van Gaal’s team the advantage at the Khalifa International Stadium, but Enner Valencia’s goal allowed Ecuador to earn a point.

As a result, the Netherlands are still in danger of losing their World Cup group.

In the moments before Ecuador’s equalizer, which was scored by Enner Valencia, Van Dijk, who began at center back for the Dutch at the Khalifa International Stadium on Friday, was accused of ball-watching by Dutch great Van Basten.

Van Basten said to NOS, “Van Dijk is just waiting and watching him shoot. What is he looking at? He needs to be on top of him! He just lets him shoot!”

The Netherlands are still the favorites to win Group A, and they must defeat Qatar in their final match to ensure that.

After losing both of their early matches—including a 3-1 loss to Senegal on Friday—the hosts have already been eliminated from the World Cup.

Van Dijk and his teammates are under a lot of pressure to perform as a result. The Netherlands did not make it to either the 2014 World Cup or the 2016 Euros.

They’ve only ever taken home one significant man’s honor, and it came about 34 years ago courtesy of Van Basten’s genius.

After the game, Van Dijk was questioned about Van Basten’s remarks.

He stated, “What am I supposed to do with it since I don’t believe he ever expresses positivity?

Speaking from the studio is simple. How can I fail as a captain? What are my options for using that data, please? I always tell the truth: I do my best to lead the group.”

The criticism of the Netherlands captain by Van Basten in the Dutch media is not new. After the victories in the Nations League against Poland and Belgium in September, he also questioned the Liverpool defender.
