Lionel Messi has been linked with a return to the club, and Barcelona head coach Xavi wants the media to refrain, telling them to “leave him in peace.”
Regarding rumors that Barcelona will try to bring Lionel Messi “home” in the summer of 2023, Xavi is refusing to engage.
The Argentine had a successful career at Camp Nou, scoring 672 goals over the course of his 17-year first team playing career.
He contributed to Barcelona winning 10 La Liga championships, four Champions Leagues, and a plethora of other prestigious awards throughout that time.
After his contract with Barça expired in the summer of 2021 and the club was unable to offer him a new one owing to financial constraints, Messi departed the team.
He later signed a free transfer to join Paris Saint-Germain.
But Messi has been hotly tipped to return to Catalonia ever since landing in France, and Xavi was once more questioned about the possibility before Barcelona’s Champions League trip to Inter.
When questioned about a potential transfer, Xavi, the manager of Barcelona, declined to discuss his interest but reaffirmed that Messi would always be welcome there.
“Leo? let’s see, but right now isn’t the time to discuss it. You are aware of my love for him. He’s a friend, and I’ll always hope the best for him.
Although Barca is his home, we aren’t doing him any favors by discussing his future. Let’s wish him the best and let him enjoy his time in Paris in peace.
It’s interesting to note that Joan Laporta, president of Barcelona, has already voiced his wish for the 35-year-old to rejoin the team soon.
“I would hope that the Messi chapter isn’t over,” he stated in the summer. “I believe it is our duty to look for an opportunity to complete that chapter, which is still open, in order for it to have a more satisfying conclusion and turn out as it should have.”
By his own standards, Messi’s debut season with PSG was quite underwhelming. In 26 Ligue 1 games, he scored six goals and provided 14 assists.
Nevertheless, Messi is currently having a very productive second season with PSG despite having a disappointing debut season in which he only managed to score 11 goals across all competitions.
The Argentine has already recorded seven goals and eight assists across all competitions this season and has gushed about how happy he is to be in Paris.
He said, “I feel excellent, different from the previous year. I knew it would be like that, and I’ve previously admitted that I struggled.
I have never really discovered who I am. It’s different this year. I came in with a different attitude and was more at ease with the team, the locker room, my teammates, and the game. In actuality, I feel fantastic. I’ve resumed enjoying it.”
Barcelona, however, climbed to the top of La Liga after defeating Mallorca, while Real Madrid could only manage a draw against Osasuna at home.
